Did Gustave Whitehead beat the Wright Brothers as the first to fly? His supporters say he beat them by two years, but that an unfair agreement between the Smithsonian Air and Space Museum and the Wrights’ estate unfairly stacks the deck against Whitehead. The arguments are strong on both sides, and this 125-year-old dispute shows no signs of dying down.

Very nice story! Shot part of a documentary on this subject in the early 90’s, some rectreations with a replica of the Gustave Flyer, and some interviews. There are apparently around 8 signed affadavits from people who claimed to see the Whitehead machine flying over Long Island Sound... But, no photographs or motion pictures, something the Wright brothers were smart enough to think of. John Maher
